Copyright or copy, right?

Help yourself! Go on, it’s on the internet and as everybody knows, if it’s on the internet, it’s fair game. So copy and paste at will. These words are free, right? Well, no, not really. Technically they’re subject to copyright, which means I, as the copywriter, have the right to prevent others from copying or reproducing these words without my permission, sue for infringement if they are reproduced without permission or, where I do give permission, expect a fee for them. I don’t have to register the copyright. It ‘arises’... Read The Rest →

Never a better time to get content marketing

With the economy beginning to grow at a pace, and business confidence booming, dusting down that content marketing campaign that’s been on hold for a year or two would seem a timely strategy… British firms are more confident about the future than they have been in years according to the latest survey by our client, the Federation of Small Businesses. And the Bank of England has backed up the findings in its own forecasts on the economy which it expects to grow by 3.4% this year, in part driven by... Read The Rest →

Doing the business to support business

From the grandeur of the European Parliament in Brussels, to a rain-soaked, gale-battered north Yorkshire market town  – we’ll go anywhere for a good story! Our client, the Federation of Small Businesses, has been particularly active in the last couple of weeks and we’ve been on hand to cover the action for the members’ magazine First Voice. Fresh from rubbing shoulders with PM David Cameron and Chancellor George Osborne at a policy conference in Westminster, CW director Stefan was hopping on the Eurostar for the launch of the Federation’s European... Thinking point: are entrepreneurs born or made…?

When we began publishing First Voice, the magazine for members of the Federation of Small Businesses, we naturally joined the organisation to get the inside track and make sure we knew what was really going on! As a small business ourselves we’ve enjoyed being ‘in the club’ and enjoying the member benefits. We’ve also met some great people and attended some inspirational events. I attended my local branch annual meeting last week and think I’ve managed to volunteer myself onto the committee (how did that happen?!). After the formalities, around... Read The Rest →

Road testing an idea in the line of duty

A politician on the cover just ensures the magazine goes straight to recycling. That pithy comment from a reader reinforced what we’d long known, but it certainly helps to have it confirmed in a focus group. We were sampling the views of the readers of First Voice – the Federation of Small Businesses’ flagship publication. We’ve made it our policy always to feature a member on the front. After all, it’s a magazine about members, for members, and focusing on the issues that concern them. One of the issues exercising large... Read The Rest →

The human side in a hard-hitting business story

Recent research by Bacs – the automated bank payment scheme – reveals that at any one time, over a million small businesses in the UK are waiting for payment for goods or services, and that the collective debt stands at a staggering £30.2 billion. Late payments have a crippling affect on small businesses, who frequently find that larger companies simply impose their own payment terms. According to the research, smaller firms are forced to wait an average eight weeks after bills are due, yet feel they cannot make a stand... Read The Rest →

In the line of duty… 150 miles for a pint!

Being editor of First Voice, the flagship membership publication of the Federation of Small Businesses, can be a tough gig. This week, all in the line of duty, Stef drove all the way to the Norfolk on the trail of a cover story and in pursuit of a pint! The story was a good one (and the beer pretty tasty too!)… Working with Mid-Norfolk FSB, Norfolk brewery Grain produced a special FSB Keep Trade Local beer to illustrate how its beer reaches parts of the local economy that a national...
